Indonesia 2005

In June 2005 Damo took four of his Advanced surf students on a cultural surfing adventure to Indonesia.
With him he took Emily Brugman, Bijou Busse, Mitch Shiels and Beau Hicks.
The idea was to expose them to different waves and to show these Broulee grommets how different our neighboring country really is, in the process it opened up their eyes and helped mature them as surfers.
We started our travels in Bali, did the Ulluwatu thing and surfed around the bukit.
Next we headed east to Timor for some mellower waves and a lot less crowds, we were lucky enough to score some awesome long point breaks and hollow ledgy reefs all to our selves. Second day Bijou had a spill on her moped and then spent the next 4 days out of action. On our 3rd night we were invited to a local Roteinsese gong party, where we were made guests of honor. The groms got up and had to dance local style. After a week of ground hog day we said our goodbyes to Timor and attempted to use or Airline tickets. But typical Indonesian style the flight to Sumbawa had been canceled with out any notification. So we were forced to make our way back to Bali, after checking the swell forecasts and lots of debate we decided G-land was our next stop. When we arrived at G-land we were welcomed to waves around head high, it turned out good practice for when it did break properly latter that week. The last few days of our stay ranged from 6-10 feet and by the end we all had a frightening survival or not so lucky story or two. “I was amazed at how quickly the crew adapted to the solid waves and how by the end of the week they were reveling in the conditions”. On our return to Bali we caught up with a few other guys from home and showed the groms why Kuta is called Kuta. From start to finish it was so entertaining and I really had a laugh taking them over there, we got tubed, rode bikes, ate heaps of food, had some sketchy adventures, all got Bali belly and soaked up the warmth and relaxed. Basically a true taste of Indo. I can’t wait to do it again, as they all said ‘it won’t be the last time we go to Indo’.
